Setiawangsa Pantai Expressway (SPE) Officially Opened in Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR: The Minister of Works, YB Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, officially inaugurated the opening of the Setiawangsa Pantai Expressway (SPE), a significant stretch of 16.3 kilometers from Setiawangsa to Kerinchi, which was opened to the public at 11:59 pm on November 3, 2023.

Objectives of the SPE

The primary objectives of the Setiawangsa Pantai Expressway (SPE) include providing an efficient alternative route in Kuala Lumpur, enhancing connectivity with existing highways, and improving links with public transportation systems like KTM Komuter, LRT, and MRT.

30-Day Toll-Free Access

Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi announced toll-free access on the SPE until December 2, 2023, at the Chan Sow Lin Toll Plaza, Ampang Toll Plaza, and Setiawangsa Toll Plaza. This initiative aims to promote the new route and provide convenience to road users.

Toll Rates Post-Free Period

Following the free period, a toll rate of RM3.50 will be applied for Class 1 vehicles (cars) using the SPE.

Connectivity and Traffic Reduction

The Setiawangsa Pantai Expressway (SPE) connects with major highways such as the SPRINT, AKLEH, DUKE, and MRR2. It aims to enhance the efficiency of Kuala Lumpur's traffic network and reduce congestion.

Studies indicate that the SPE can reduce traffic congestion by up to 30% during peak hours, benefiting routes to and from the city center.

Impact on Kuala Lumpur Traffic

The SPE's opening is a significant milestone in the government's efforts to alleviate traffic congestion in Kuala Lumpur. It is expected to reduce travel time significantly, for instance, reducing the peak-hour journey from Kerinchi to Taman Melati and Gombak to just 35 minutes.

Record-Breaking Achievements

The SPE has been recognized in the Malaysia Book of Records for having the longest two-deck route on a single pier structure and the longest elevated ground bridge.

Call for Responsible Use

Minister Linggi urged users to cherish and responsibly use the Setiawangsa Pantai Expressway (SPE), aligning with the MYJalan Campaign by the Ministry of Works to promote shared responsibility for road infrastructure.
